A life shaped by wood and paint

Sergey Vasilyevich Malyutin began his days in Moscow, born into a family of merchants in 1859. His path toward the brush was set in Voronezh, where an exhibition by the Peredvizhniki caught his eye in 1870. He later moved to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, studying under Illarion Pryanishnikov and Vladimir Makovsky between 1883 and 1886. After receiving a silver medal upon graduation, he earned the title of Free Artist in 1890.

His hands worked through many forms. He was a painter, a designer for scenery, an illustrator, and an architect. In 1890, his work took a turn toward the decorative when he designed the first set of Matryoshka dolls, which Vasily Zvyozdochkin brought to life in wood. This small, nesting object became a piece of Russian culture that traveled far beyond its origins.

The patterns of design and stage

Malyutin found a home within the Private Opera of Savva Mamontov, working as a designer from 1890. He spent years creating sets for ballets and operas, including the Nutcracker at the Mariinsky Theater. His eye for detail extended to costume sketches, where he drafted figures like the Skomorokh, Boyarin, and Guslyar in 1910. These designs often pulled from folk motifs and the Russian Revival movement.

His interests moved between the studio and the landscape. At the Talashkino art colony from 1900 to 1903, he worked with ceramics and carving. He even designed a building for a school library called Teremok. His architectural work often featured fantastic folk elements, much like his illustrations for the tales of Pushkin.

      Later years and shifting shadows

As the decades passed, Malyutin’s affiliations changed alongside the political landscape. He joined the Peredvizhniki in 1913 and was named an Academician by the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1914. After the 1917 Revolution, he taught at Vkhutemas until 1923. During the years between 1918 and 1921, his work appeared on the Rosta Windows propaganda posters.

In his final years, he helped found the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia in 1922 and became an advocate for Socialist Realism. His late paintings included portraits such as that of N. Gibner around 1920 and a study of a partisan in 1936. He remained in Moscow until his death on December 6, 1937.
