A Life of Light and Colour

Born in Chuguyev within the Russian Empire, Sigrid Maria Schauman carried a cosmopolitan spirit from her earliest days. Her childhood was marked by movement, passing through Poland before her family returned to Finland in 1885. This early exposure to different landscapes perhaps prepared her for a life that would eventually seek out the warmth of southern light. She began her formal training at the Finnish Association of Arts Drawing School in Helsinki, learning under teachers such as Carl Jahn and Helene Schjerfbeck. These formative years in Helsinki laid the foundation for an artist who would later find herself drawn to the far reaches of Europe.

Her travels were as much about seeking artistic truth as they were about exploration. She wandered through Italy, France, Denmark, and Egypt, always looking for a way to capture the essence of her surroundings. In the years following her studies, she moved through Copenhagen and Florence, absorbing the influences of French-influenced modernism. Even during the difficult years of the second world war, when she found herself confined to more local settings, she looked at the parks and gardens of Helsinki with a fresh eye. She dressed these familiar northern spaces in southern colours, finding a way to bring a sense of lushness to the local landscape.

      The Evolution of Vision

The work of Sigrid Schauman was never static; it grew and shifted alongside her own experiences and physical changes. Her style moved toward an intense form of colourism and visionary expression, leaning into the principles of impressionism and post-impressionism. She avoided the typical romanticism of the wilderness, preferring instead to focus on cultural landscapes, portraits, and nude studies. There was a certain reduction in her later work, a shedding of unnecessary detail that gave her paintings a mirage-like quality. This shift was influenced by both her artistic intent and the gradual weakening of her eyesight.

As she aged, her creativity experienced a remarkable resurgence after the age of 70. The late works from this period are characterized by being light-drenched and often quite reductive. She possessed a unique ability to use colour as a primary language, creating self-portraits and landscapes that felt deeply personal yet visually expansive. Her paintings were not about documenting every leaf or stone, but about capturing the interplay of light and hue.

A Dual Legacy in Art and Criticism

For much of her adult life, Sigrid Schauman balanced the roles of creator and observer. To support herself and her daughter, Elisabeth, she worked for nearly three decades as an art critic for two Swedish-language newspapers in Helsinki. This position allowed her to engage deeply with the contemporary art scene, publishing over 1500 reviews, interviews, and travel reports. Her critical eye was sharp, and she understood the significance of non-figurative art even if she did not fully adopt abstraction in her own practice.

Her contributions to the Finnish art community were marked by both participation and leadership. She was a founding member of the Prisma group of artists in 1956 and received several honours, including the Pro Finlandia medal in 1953. Her life was one of immense perseverance, as she continued to paint well into her nineties despite the obstacles of financial hardship and failing health. Even a year before her death, she was able to participate in a retrospective exhibition held in honour of her 100th birthday at the Amos Anderson Art Museum.
