      A life in movement

The path of Wilhelm Ziegler led through several German and Swiss towns during the early sixteenth century. Born around 1480 in Creglingen, his hands first learned the craft under Hans Burgkmair the Elder in Augsburg. By 1507, he had established himself as a citizen of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. His work followed him across borders, finding homes in Augsburg, Rothenburg, and Würzburg, with a notable period spent in Fribourg, Switzerland, between 1522 and 1531.

His presence in these cities left behind more than just names on documents. He moved through the workshops of the Renaissance, carrying the lessons of his master into new landscapes. In Fribourg, he took up the mantle of painter, succeeding Hans Boden. This period of residency shaped the way he approached the wood and the pigment.

      The marks of a maker

To look closely at his work is to see the specific traces of his hand. He often left a small mark: a Z placed above a chisel. This symbol appears on various surfaces, from charcoal drawings of young boys to the heavy wooden panels of altarpieptices. Some scholars have looked for him under other names, such as the Monogrammist IZ, but the physical evidence of his mark connects these disparate pieces.

His technical focus included painting, draughtsmanship, and printmaking. The surfaces he worked on were often part of larger structures:

      • Oil on wood panels used for church altarpieces.
      • Charcoal drawings that capture the soft edges of a subject.
      • Detailed inscriptions, such as those found on his panel of St Louis of Toulouse.

      Subjects and shadows

The figures in his paintings carry the weight of their own stories. In his 1524 work, Saints Catherine of Alexandria and Barbara, the details are sharp and heavy with meaning. One can see the breaking wheel and the sword associated with Catherine, alongside the tower and chalice of Barbara. These panels were once part of a folding altarpiece for a church in Ependes, Switzerland.

His compositions often relied on established religious narratives, yet they felt grounded by his specific way of rendering light and form. In An Adoration of the Child, dated 1520, there is a clear connection to the style of Dürer. He did not shy away from the heavy textures of oil on wood, using them to define the folds of cloth and the grim reality of martyrdom scenes. His work remains in places like the Musée du Louvre and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where the physical weight of his pigments still holds its shape.
