Born in Gravesend, Kent, in 1859, Charles James Adams grew up as the second child of Charles Adams, a journeyman pastrycook, and Sarah. His early years in England provided the foundation for a life dedicated to observing the natural world. He sought formal training at the Leicester School of Art under Wilmot Pilsbury, a period that proved foundational to his technical skill. It was during this time that he earned the Mulready Gold Medal for Life Drawing from the Society of Arts in London, an achievement that marked him as a talent to watch.
His path took him through many different corners of England. He spent time teaching art in Leicester and lived in various locations including Sydenham in London, Horsham in Surrey, and later in West Sussex towns like Billingshurst and Midhurst. Eventually, he settled in Farnham, Surrey, where he remained until his death in 1931. These shifts in geography meant that his surroundings were constantly changing, offering him new subjects for his brushes.
Adams possessed a versatile hand, working with oils, watercolours, and lithographs. While he was an accomplished watercolourist, often using techniques like highlighting with white to add clarity, his oil paintings allowed for a different kind of depth. He found particular interest in the quiet rhythms of rural life. His work frequently featured animals, specifically sheep and horses, captured within the stillness of the landscape.
Beyond the pastoral, he turned his attention to historical and genre subjects. Some of his works sought to document specific moments or settings, such as:
His landscapes often captured the atmosphere of a specific time of day or weather condition, from the soft light of A Sunny Morning to the heavy air of A Cloudy Day. He had a way of placing animals within these settings, such as in Sheep and Lambs or Cattle Warming Themselves On A Summer's Day, making the viewer feel the presence of the living creatures within the English countryside.
Throughout his career, Adams was a frequent presence in the major art circles of his time. He exhibited his work at prestigious venues including the Royal Academy of Arts, the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, and the Royal Society of British Artists. His reach extended to provincial galleries as well, with works shown in Manchester, Liverpool, and Nottingham.
The permanence of his contribution is found in the collections that hold his pieces today. Museums such as the Leicester Museum & Art Gallery and the Brighton Museum & Art Gallery preserve his vision of the English landscape. Through these works, the quiet observations of a man who lived through the late Victorian and Edwardian eras continue to be seen.
