      Edmond Lechevallier Chevignard (1825 - 1902)

      Edmond Lechevallier Chevignard (né à Lyon en 1825 et mort à Paris en 1902) était un peintre, graveur et décorateur français dont l’œuvre témoigne d’une remarquable maîtrise technique et d’une sensibilité artistique profonde. Bien que son nom ne soit pas aussi célèbre qu'autres contemporains de la Belle Époque, ses peintures et dessins offrent une fenêtre fascinante sur les préoccupations esthétiques et intellectuelles de son temps.

      Élève de Michel Martin Drolling dont il fut l’ami proche, Lechevallier Chevignard partageait avec Olivier Merson une même passion pour la peinture classique et réaliste. Cette influence se reflète dans son style artistique caractéristique : une attention particulière aux détails anatomiques et à la lumière naturelle, conjuguée à une maîtrise exceptionnelle de la couleur et à une composition équilibrée.

      Sa carrière artistique débuta au Salon de Paris en 1849 où il exposa initialement des portraits et des peintures d’histoire. Il continua à présenter ses œuvres aux Salons jusqu'en 1901, devenant membre du jury en dessin à la troisième exposition internationale de blanc et noir en 1888. Cette participation régulière au Salon lui permit de rester informé des tendances artistiques émergentes et de développer son propre langage pictural.

      Après avoir ouvert un atelier de dessin en 1874, Lechevallier Chevignard enseigna à l’École nationale des arts décoratifs où il forma plusieurs jeunes artistes talentueux. Il collabora notamment au *Magasin pittoresque* et contribua à la décoration intérieure et murale de bâtiments emblématiques tels le château Saint Roch à Lyon et les vitraux du château de Chantilly.

      Son œuvre est marquée par une diversité de sujets allant des portraits individuels aux vues urbaines, en passant par des œuvres religieuses et mythologiques. Parmi ses peintures les plus remarquables figurent notamment ‘Madeleine de Savoie’, une magnifique peinture Renaissance représentant la reine Marie Bonaparte dans un cadre élégant et raffiné ; ‘Saint Jacques’, une fresque monumentale illustrant Saint Georges combattant le dragon avec une palette colorée et une composition dynamique ; et ‘Anne de Montmorency’, une œuvre classique capturant l’atmosphère noble et raffinée du XVIe siècle.
