The Landscape of a Life Born in Salisbury, United Kingdom, John Piper found his true sense of place much later, when he moved to Cornwall in 1963. This relocation changed the course of his life, as the rugged terrain of the southwest became the primary subject of his creative attention. Before he was known for his paintings, he spent twenty years teaching ceramics, drawing, and painting in Penzance schools. This period of teaching allowed him to refine his understanding of form and texture, skills that would eventually define his mature style.
