The Life and Art of Adam Offinger
Adam Offinger was a German painter whose origins likely trace back to a family of goldsmiths in the region of Nördlingen or Regensburg in Southern Germany. His professional career included serving as a court painter to Duke Heinrich Julius of Braunschweig starting in 1580, though his artistic activity in the region is documented as early as the 1570s.
His body of work encompasses a variety of subjects, ranging from religious altarpieces to detailed portraiture. Notable religious works include a crucifixion panel for the Christuskirche in Hasserode, originally created in 1598, and various altarpieces located in Ampfurth, Pömmelte, and Schenkenhorst. His portraiture includes depictions of figures such as Clara von der Asseburg, Hans Ernst von der Asseburg, and Heinrich von Saldern.
Artistic Style and Notable Works
Offinger’s artistic identity is often linked to his use of a specific monogram, a large "A" with a smaller "O" inserted, which was inspired by the famous "AD" monogram of Albrecht Dürer. His work includes several significant pieces held in various collections, such as a portrait of Hans Ernst von der Asseburg in Spanish attire, which is currently held in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.
