The Marseille Roots and Parisian Shift
Marseille, 1848. A child is born into a landscape of salt air and iron rails. His mother belongs to an established Marseille family, while his father holds a high position within the railroad company, bringing Corsican roots to the Mediterranean coast. The young Alfred Casile begins his training under Philippe-Auguste Jeanron at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Marseille. Life follows a predictable industrial rhythm; he finds employment with the dock company, working amidst the heavy machinery and maritime commerce of the port.
The pivot occurs in 1879. The docks are left behind for Paris. By 1880, his work appears at the Salon, marking his entry into a different kind of light. In the capital, he seeks further instruction from Antoine Guillemet. This period brings him into the orbit of Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, and Alfred Sisley. The atmosphere of the studio and the shared gaze toward the natural world connect him to these figures.
Travels and the Belgian Years
The trajectory moves through Italy before returning to the south of France. In 1891, he marries Constance Dutoint, a woman from Brussels whom he met during his time in Paris. The couple settles into a life that spans borders. They spend several years in Belgium, where Casile finds new subjects in the quiet corners of Bruges, Antwerp, and Ghent. His palette shifts to capture these northern landscapes, moving away from the intense Mediterranean sun toward different textures of light.
His work during this era focuses on the following themes:
- Coastal scenes and marine landscapes
- Riverbanks and watermills
- The quietude of French and Belgian villages
A Final Return to Marseille
The movement ends back in Marseille. The later years are marked by a descent into the effects of absinthe addiction, a struggle that leads to his death in 1909. While his personal life fades, his presence remains etched into the geography of his birthplace; a street in Marseille bears his name. His legacy is held within the walls of several institutions, including the Musée Granet, Musée Calvet, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille.
The physical traces of his career remain in collections such as:
- Musée de la Castre
- Musée d'Évreux
- Musée de Grenoble
- Musée Cantini
- Musée des Beaux-Arts de Béziers
- Musée d'Art de Toulon
