      Early Life, Family and Training

Alice Frey was born on 25 June 1895 in Antwerp, Belgium. She grew up in a household with two other children, part of a family of three. Before her life became defined by the canvas, she learned the practical skills of a dressmaker. This trade was a significant part of her early years, and she eventually shared this knowledge with others by working as a school teacher.

Her path toward becoming a painter began when she enrolled as a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. It was within those studio walls that she dedicated herself to the study of drawing and painting. This formal training provided the foundation for the visual language she would develop throughout her life.

      Artistic Circles and Movements

Life in Ostend brought Alice Frey into the company of significant figures who helped shape her path. During her time there, she formed a close friendship with the painter James Ensor. This connection proved vital as she moved from her early training toward a dedicated life in the arts. In 1922, she married Georges Marlier, a man who shared her devotion to the creative life as both a painter and a critic. Together, they became part of a specific group of artists known as Lumière.

The members of Lumière were active in the Belgian avant-garde scene of the 1920s. This group sought to push the boundaries of the era, even going so far as to publish their own journal to share their ideas. Frey was not content to simply participate in existing circles; she eventually established her own journal, titled Ça Ira. Through these publications and gatherings, she helped maintain a presence in the evolving Belgian art landscape.

      Technique and Artistic Style

Frey’s visual language underwent a quiet transformation as she matured. Her early paintings were rooted in expressionism, leaning into the raw emotionality of the movement. As time passed, her approach shifted toward magic realism, moving away from pure expression toward a more dreamlike, structured reality. This evolution was shaped by the influence of artists like Marc Chagall, Edgard Tytgat, and James Ensor, whose presence can be felt in the way she handled light and form.

She often populated her canvases with colourful, naively painted figures. These characters frequently appeared within indeterminate landscapes, existing in spaces that felt both specific and otherworldly. Her subject matter was deeply tied to the rhythms of life and the sea, often focusing on themes of carnival and celebration. Even when depicting somber subjects, there was a sense of movement and ritual that defined her compositions.

      Later Years and Death

In her later years, Alice Frey lived alone in Ostend. During this time, she became profoundly deaf, a change that marked a quiet period in her life. She remained in the Belgian coastal city until her death on 30 August 1981 in Ostend, Belgium.

Following her death in 1981, much of her work was sold at auction. Today, only the small collection that she willed to Ostend remains readily accessible.
