A Life of Transition
Barend Jan Abraham Polvliet was a Dutch painter and draftsperson born in Schoonhoven. Before dedicating himself to the arts, he pursued a military career, serving as an officer in the artillery, a path much like that of his father, Cornelis Gerhardus Polvliet. This transition from military service to the canvas allowed him to develop a focus on landscapes and genre scenes, particularly depictions of people working on the land. His artistic contributions were recognized through his membership in Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas, where he exhibited his work, as well as his participation in exhibitions held by Levende Meesters.
Artistic Recognition and Works
Polvliet's talent was notably honored in 1906 when he was awarded the Willink van Collenprijs for his painting Zonsondergang in de venen. His body of work includes various landscapes and genre subjects, such as Village on the Vecht, which is held in the collection of Museum De Waag, Deventer. Throughout his career, he remained an active figure in the Dutch art scene until his death in Den Dolder.
