      A Life in Naples

Camillo Miola lived much of his life within the borders of Naples. Born there in 1840, he spent his early years under the influence of a Jesuit education before turning toward the Royal Institute of Fine Arts. It was in this academy that he studied under Domenico Morelli. His hands learned the weight of history through these lessons. He worked briefly for the government, but his focus remained on the canvas and the study of the past.

In 1867, he traveled to Paris. There, he spent time in the studio of Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier and encountered Gérôme. These encounters in France brought new perspectives back to Italy. By 1868, he had returned to Naples. His travels later took him to Egypt in 1883, a trip taken on a yacht alongside Francesco Netti and Eduardo Dalbono. This movement through different landscapes left its mark on the subjects he chose to paint.

      The Subjects of the Canvas

His work often looked backward, focusing on historical scenes and portraits. He found particular interest in Neo-Pompeian and Orientalist themes. Some of his paintings captured specific moments from antiquity or distant lands:

      • The Oracle: A scene depicting the Pythia at Delphi, seated upon a tripod amidst rising smoke.
      • Plautus the Miller: An early work that traveled to competitions in Naples, Dublin, and Paris.
      • A Roman and a Barbarian: A piece shown at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris.
      • Portrait of Georges Bizet: A study of the composer.

He also engaged with the theater, serving as the Director for Costumes for Plautus' comedies at the University of Naples. His eye for detail extended to his writing, as he used the pseudonym Biacca to publish art criticism. In the 1890s, he shared his knowledge by teaching drawing in a girls' school and instructing students in the history of art at the Naples academy.

      Later Years and Legacy

Miola held several positions within the artistic community of his home city. He served as the Secretary of the Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti for five years and acted as the President of the Artistic Congress of Rome in 1883. He was also named an honorary Professor of the Royal Institute.

His life ended in Naples in 1919. The works he left behind, such as his depictions of ancient Greek priestesses or Roman figures, remain held in collections like the J. Paul Getty Museum. These paintings continue to show the specific light and atmosphere of the historical worlds he studied.
