The Life and Legacy of Doris Marie Leeper
Doris Marie Leeper was an American sculptor and painter born in Charlotte, United States. Originally intending to become a brain surgeon—a pursuit that earned her the nickname "Doc"—she eventually graduated from Duke University in 1951 with a degree in art history. After working in commercial art, she moved to the isolated community of Eldora, Florida, in 1958. By 1961, she had transitioned into a full-time artist, specializing in both painting and sculpture. Her diverse body of work is held in over 100 collections across the United States and abroad.
Environmental Advocacy and the Atlantic Center for the Arts
Leeper was a prominent figure in the Florida environmental movement, advocating for the protection of Mosquito Lagoon and the establishment of the Canaveral National Seashore. Her influence was instrumental in the creation of this seashore, and she served on its advisory commission. Additionally, she founded the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 1982, envisioning it as an interdisciplinary artist-in-residence program. Through her efforts, the center became a space where artists of various disciplines could collaborate. Her commitment to conservation also led to the protection of lands that now comprise the Doris Leeper Spruce Creek Preserve. In 1999, she was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.
