      A Pioneer of British Landscape

George Lambert was an English landscape artist and theatre scene painter who emerged as a pioneer of British landscape in art. Trained under Warner Hassells and John Wootton, he quickly gained recognition for the quality of his landscape paintings. His work often reflected the style of Gaspar Poussin and Salvator Rosa, characterized by large and fine landscapes. One of his most celebrated works is A view of Box Hill, Surrey, a depiction of a well-known beauty spot south of London.

Beyond his landscapes, Lambert achieved a significant reputation as a scene-painter. Working at the Lincoln's Inn Fields Theatre and later at the Covent Garden Theatre, he collaborated with Amigoni to produce scenery of exceptional quality. His social life was as notable as his art; he was a man of jovial temperament and shrewd wit, often hosting gatherings in his painting-loft at Covent Garden. These evening meetings, which included men of note from the theatrical and fashionable worlds, eventually gave rise to the well-known Beefsteak Club.

      Artistic Societies and Legacy

Lambert was deeply involved in the professional organization of artists in London. He was a member of the Society of Artists of Great Britain and participated in various Academy exhibitions. In 1765, he became a founding member of the Incorporated Society of Artists of Great Britain, serving as its first president. His professional circle included figures such as William Hogarth and George Vertue, and he was involved in efforts to secure copyright for artists through an act of parliament.

His artistic output included various notable subjects, such as:

      • Views of Plymouth and Mount Edgcumbe
      • A view of Saltwood Castle in Kent
      • A view of Dover
      • A series of Indian views for the old East India House

Lambert's influence extended to the next generation of artists through his pupils, including John Inigo Richards and John Collett. He passed away at his home in the Piazza in Covent Garden.
