The Multidisciplinary Legacy of Giuseppe Meda
Giuseppe Meda, originally known as Giuseppe Lomazzo, was a versatile Italian figure who practiced as a painter, architect, and hydraulics engineer. Born in Milan, he began his artistic journey by apprenticing as a painter under Bernardino Campi. His intellectual pursuits extended beyond the canvas, as he studied both architecture and engineering. One of his notable engineering endeavors included a project intended to make the Adda River navigable from Cornate and Paderno.
As a painter, Meda was an exponent of late Lombard Mannerism. His diverse body of work includes:
- The frescoes in the Cathedral of Monza, created in collaboration with Giuseppe Arcimboldo.
- The decoration of the organ in the Duomo of Milan.
His architectural contributions involved completing works initiated by Pellegrino Tibaldi, such as the Church of St. Sebastian and the Lazzaretto Chapel in Milan. Additionally, Meda provided drawings for the Escorial and initiated projects for the Trivulzio family chapels at San Stefano in Brolo and the reconstruction of S. Lorenzo.
