A Life of Observation and Light

Henri Charles Langerock was a Belgian painter and photographer born in Ghent. His artistic journey began at the École des Beaux-Arts de Gand, where he studied under Hendrik Van der Haert, Jean Van der Plaetsen, Auguste Van den Steene, and Théodore Joseph Canneel. His early training included engraving, lithography, and the study of genre scenes. Seeking to explore the world, he left Ghent at the age of sixteen, eventually spending significant time in France, particularly in Paris and Marseille. His travels also took him to Italy, Africa, and South America.

As a painter, he was recognized for his mastery of landscapes, bucolic scenes, and woodland atmospheres. His work often featured forests, trees, and the play of light through foliage. Beyond traditional canvas painting, he was involved in large-scale spectacles, including Panoramas such as the Bataille de Tell-el-Kébir and the Ville de Rio de Janeiro. He also created Dioramas, including Le continent mystérieux ou Stanley dans les Ténèbres de l'Afrique.

The Intersection of Painting and Photography

Langerock’s career was uniquely shaped by his dual expertise as a painter and a photographer. In Paris, he served as an assistant to Nadar and later succeeded Numa Blanc at his studio on Boulevard des Italiens. He was a noted portraitist and a photographer of nature and agriculture. He is specifically recognized as an initiator of photographic retouching, having patented a system in 1865 known as the "portraits peints" process. This technique allowed for the modification of a subject's appearance—such as age, clothing, or hair—to create a seamless, realistic effect on paper.

His artistic output included various subjects, from the landscapes of the Vosges to exotic scenes from Egypt and Brazil. His works have been held in various collections, including the Musée de Picardie and the Musée Nacional de Belas Artes in Rio de Janeiro. He passed away in Marseille.
