A Versatile Master of Form and Light

Henri Schoonbrood was a Dutch painter, pottery painter, mosaicist, watercolorist, draftsperson, glass painter, muralist, and book cover designer. Born in Maastricht, Netherlands, his artistic journey began with studies at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht under the guidance of Henri Jonas. His talent was recognized early when he shared the first prize in the Willink van Collenwedstrijd organized by Arti et Amicitiae in Amsterdam. Seeking to expand his horizons, he moved to Amsterdam in 1930 to study monumental art at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten under professor Richard Roland Holst.

His diverse body of work spans various mediums, including portraits, landscapes, cityscapes, and drawings. He was particularly prolific in creating stained glass windows, having produced more than 100 for churches, public institutions, and private clients. His mosaics can be found in the conservatory in Maastricht and the Royal Air Force building in The Hague. While his early style was figurative, his work became increasingly abstract following the war.
