The Life and Education of Ivan Tišov

Born in the village of Viškovci near Đakovo, Ivan Tišov began his artistic journey at the School of Crafts in Zagreb. His formal training continued at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, which eventually led him to receive a scholarship to the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. This period of study was pivotal, as he later brought the ideas of the Munich Secession movement back to Zagreb. Following his studies, he served as a vocational teacher and eventually became a professor of painting and drawing at the Academy of Fine Arts, Zagreb, where he remained for the rest of his life.

In the years between 1913 and 1914, Tišov trained in Paris at the Académie Julian. This period of study was intended to prepare him for his work on the decorations for the University Library in Zagreb.

      Artistic Works and Public Contributions

Tišov’s portfolio is characterized by a variety of subjects, ranging from allegorical works to intimate portraits. While studying in Vienna, he was commissioned to paint four allegorical ceiling works for the Golden Hall in Zagreb: Worship, Theology, Art (also known as Music), and Science. His painting Art earned him a bronze medal at the 1896 Millennium Exhibition in Budapest. He was also known for his ability to achieve an amazing likeness in portraits, such as those of his wife Ana Neuhäuser, Vladimir Vidrić, and Grga Martić, often working directly with the brush without the use of sketches.

His thematic interests shifted over time, moving from mythology toward the folklore of his native Slavonia, as seen in his work Under the Maple. His large-scale commissions include:

      • The foyer ceiling of the Croatian National Theatre
      • Wall paintings in churches in Križevci, Bjelovar, and other locations
      • The Orthodox Iconostasis of the Church of Saint Nicholas in Pačetin
      • Decorations for the University Library in Zagreb
