      A Life in Delft

Jan Schoonhoven lived much of his life within the quiet rhythms of Delft, Netherlands. For many years, his days were defined by his work as a civil servant for the Dutch Postal Service, a role he held from 1946 to 1979. This steady, administrative life existed alongside a deep, private commitment to his studio practice. He studied at the Academy in The Hague between 1932 and 1936, laying the foundation for an artistic language that would eventually reach far beyond the borders of his home city.

His early creative explorations were much softer than the structured forms he later became known for. In those beginning years, he worked with watercolours and pen and ink drawings that possessed a quality similar to the works of Paul Klee. As time passed, his interests shifted toward the tachiste style, using more organic and irregular structures in his paintings and papier-mâché reliefs.

      The Search for Essential Forms

By the late 1950s, Schoonhoven began to move away from expressive, colorful surfaces. He became a founding member of the Nul Group and was also involved with the Dutch informel group. These movements shared a desire to strip art down to its most objective and pure elements. In 1960, he began creating white reliefs characterized by a geometric structure and a repetitive, serial approach. This period marked a departure from the subjective toward the systematic.

His materials were often humble and found in everyday life. He did not seek expensive or rare substances, instead choosing to work with:

      • Cardboard and corrugated cardboard
      • Papier-mâché
      • Newsprint and plywood
      • Toilet rolls and paint

Through these modest items, he investigated light, form, and volume. His work focused on the grid and the monochrome, creating surfaces that felt both strictly ordered and strangely familiar. These reliefs were not meant to tell a story or express a personal emotion, but rather to explore how light interacts with physical texture.

      Recognition and Legacy

Though he remained a man of Delft, Schoonhoven's reputation grew within the international avant-garde. He collaborated with the German Zero group starting in 1960, connecting his local practice to a broader European dialogue. One of his significant achievements was receiving the Second Prize at the 1967 São Paulo Bienal, an honor that brought further attention to his systematic investigations into abstraction.

His influence remains visible in major collections across the globe. His works are held in institutions such as:

Schoonhoven passed away in 1994, leaving behind a body of work that transformed simple materials into complex studies of repetition. His ability to find a quiet modernity in the most basic structures continues to be studied by those interested in the intersection of art and the everyday object.
