The Life and Art of John Gibson
Born in Conwy, United Kingdom, John Gibson was a Welsh neoclassical sculptor who spent much of his career in Rome. His artistic journey began with an apprenticeship to cabinet-makers, though he eventually moved to work with monumental masons. His early talent was recognized by the historian William Roscoe, who provided him access to a library of Italian masters. After receiving conflicting advice regarding whether to study in London or Rome, Gibson arrived in Rome in October 1817. There, he was received by Antonio Canova, who provided both artistic experience and financial support. Gibson's work was characterized by a pursuit of purity of character and beauty of form, often drawing subjects from the free actions of the Italian people he observed during his walks.

He was elected a Royal Academician in 1836. Gibson was also a pioneer in introducing color to his statues, applying it to drapery and flesh in works such as the Tinted Venus. Upon his death in Rome, he bequeathed his property and the contents of his studio to the Royal Academy.
