A Life Across Continents
Born in Plymouth, Devon, on 19 December 1805, John Skinner Prout grew up in a family deeply connected to the arts. His father, John Prout, was the elder brother of the watercolourist Samuel Prout, and this familial link placed him within a circle of significant artistic activity from his earliest years. In 1828, he married Maria Heathilla, a musician and painter, and together they built a large family that eventually included eleven children.
His early professional life saw him establishing himself in London and Bristol. By 1838, his skill had earned him election to the New Society of Painters in Water Colours. However, a desire for new opportunities led him to emigrate to Australia in December 1840. He arrived in Sydney with his wife and eight children, bringing with him a lithographic press that allowed him to establish the J. S. Prout and Co. Australian Lithographic Establishment.
The years spent in the colonies were marked by movement and adaptation. After working in Sydney, he moved to Van Diemen's Land in 1844, where his work found a receptive audience, including the patronage of Governor Sir John Franklin. He eventually returned to England in 1848, settling in London for the remainder of his life until his death in August 1876.
The Art of the Landscape and Lithography
Prout was a versatile creator, working with oil paint, watercolour, lithography, and pencil. His approach to the Australian landscape was often direct and spontaneous. Rather than focusing solely on topographical accuracy, he sought to capture the movement of life within the scenery. His watercolours frequently featured human activity, such as cart tracks, fencing, and small huts, integrated into the natural environment.
His technical method often involved a sense of urgency. Many of his works appear almost unfinished, with a focus on a central subject while the edges remain light or unworked. He had a particular way of using flashes of primary blue, red, or Chinese white to highlight the surfaces of rocks, leaves, and water. This economy of line helped him capture fleeting moments in the outdoors.
Beyond his paintings, Prout was an accomplished lithographer and writer. He produced several important publications that documented his travels and the life of the colonies, including:
- Sydney Illustrated
- Tasmania Illustrated
- Views of Melbourne and Geelong
- An illustrated handbook of the voyage to Australia and a visit to the gold fields
Legacy in Print and Portraiture
Prout's work left a mark on the visual record of 19th-century Australia. His lithographs provided a window into the lives of emigrants and convicts, documenting both the physical landscape and the social structures of the time. He also engaged in portraiture, notably creating naturalistic depictions of Aboriginal people in New South Wales and Tasmania.
His influence extended to other artists working in the colonies, such as Conrad Martens. While some contemporaries found his simplicity of line and colour unusual, his ability to articulate both person and place remained a distinct part of his contribution to colonial art. Today, much of his work is held in significant collections, including the National Art Gallery of New South Wales and the National Library of Australia.
