      A Life Between Borders

Riidaja, Estonia, 1904. The air in Valga County holds the beginning of Karin Luts’s story. She grows up among sisters Lonny and Meta, and her brother Elmar, under the guidance of her teacher father, Andres. Her path moves from the Pärnu Estonian School Society Progymnasium to the Art College in Pallas, Tartu. Here, the influence of Konrad Mägi shapes her early vision. When Mägi passes, Ado Vabbe remains to guide her. She masters the technical precision of etching and lithography under Magnus Zeller.

The year 1928 marks a shift. Luts moves to Paris, finding herself at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière under André Lhote. This period in France introduces a new breadth to her perspective. She returns to Estonia, settling in Tallinn to work as an illustrator and costume designer. In 1933, her hand appears in the illustrations for Eduard Visnapuu's children's book, Loomade talu.

The Weight of Gold and War

By 1935, Luts turns toward textile design. A significant moment arrives in 1937 when the Ministry of Economy commissions a tapestry design for the Estonia pavilion at the Paris World's Fair. The work earns a gold medal. Her professional life expands into criticism and lecturing; she writes on exhibitions of Italian women artists and teaches at the Konrad Mägi College of Art.

The landscape changes violently. In 1939, Luts travels through Rome with the Tallinn Women's Club, working in the studio of Countess Mola. The outbreak of the Second World War halts her plans to return to Italy. By 1944, the Soviet occupation forces a flight from Estonia. She and her husband, the linguist Peter Arumaa, seek refuge in Sweden. They eventually become Swedish citizens in the 1950s.

      Graphic Precision and Final Years

In Sweden, Luts finds a new rhythm through graphic design. Her technical training resurfaces as she studies graphics in Stockholm between 1960 and 1968, followed by further study in Salzburg. Her work continues to bridge the gap between different media, from oil painting to gouache and watercolour.

Her later years are spent in Stockholm. She leaves behind a legacy of art for the Tartu Art Museum and her writings for the Estonian Literary Museum. Her artistic output remains defined by several key elements:
