The Artistic Evolution of Lillian Genth

Lillian Mathilde Genth was an American impressionist artist who began her career at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women. After receiving a fellowship to paint in Europe, she settled in Paris, where she studied at the Académie Carmen. During this period, she painted landscapes, genre scenes, and waterfronts. In 1904, Genth returned to the United States and began to flourish in New York City, exhibiting at the National Academy of Design and the Art Club of Philadelphia. By 1906, she shifted her focus toward the female form, developing a style that depicted nude females within landscape settings. One of her notable works from this era, The Lark, won the Shaw Memorial Prize at the 83rd Annual Exhibition of the National Academy of Design in 1908.

      Travels and Changing Themes

In 1928, Genth announced she would no longer paint nudes, choosing instead to focus on Spanish and Oriental themes. Her travels led her to explore diverse cultures and landscapes:

      • Spain: She painted scenes of Spanish culture, including Las Abanicas, which depicts women at the Seville Fair, as well as works related to bullfighting like La Novia del Torero and Bull Fight.
      • North Africa: She captured the colors of cities and portraits of local women.
      • The Orient: Her travels included Japan, where she painted Theatre Street, Tokyo, and China, where she created Hong Kong at night. She also traveled to Siam, creating The Royal Barge, and visited Papua, where she painted Papuan Wedding (Port Morsby).

Genth lived in New York City and spent time at her estate, Hermitcliff, in the Berkshire Mountains. She died in New York City.
