Following his studies, he entered the faculty of medicine in Paris, where he was admitted to the externship in 1873. His travels took him across vast landscapes, beginning with three years spent in the Algerian Sahara between 1884 and 1886, specifically in Laghouat, Mzab, and among the Chaouia. In 1890, he traveled to Senegal, where he joined the expedition of Colonel Alfred Dodds, serving as a substitute physician for the battalion.
