The Life and Art of Marthe Massin

Born into a wealthy family in Liège, Belgium, Marthe Massin was a painter who trained at the private art academy "Blanc-Garin" in Brussels. After her studies, she opened her own studio in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode in 1889. Her early artistic output included cityscapes, figures of workers, and peasant women, subjects she encountered during summer stays in Borchtlombeek or Bornem. Massin exhibited her work at the "Salon triennal" in 1884 and the "Salon de Voorwaarts" in 1889. She also taught painting to the children of Count Marnix von Sint-Aldegonde.

In 1889, Massin met the poet Émile Verhaeren, whom she married on 24 August 1891. Following their marriage, her work shifted toward subjects from their shared life, including their house and garden, utilizing techniques such as oil paint, red chalk, and ink. She also created small studies of items from Verhaeren's desk. While she continued to paint, she did not exhibit her work publicly again after this period. Massin also assisted in the preparation of Verhaeren's books by transcribing texts and helping compile original manuscripts.

      Legacy and Preservation

Following the death of Émile Verhaeren in 1916, Massin dedicated herself to preserving his memory and literary legacy. She rebuilt their house in Caillou-qui-bique after it was destroyed during World War I and donated a portion of Verhaeren's literary legacy, including unpublished poems and special editions, to the Royal Library of Belgium in 1930. Upon her death in 1931, she bequeathed his entire archive to the same library.

Much of Massin's work is held in the Archives and Museum of Literature in Brussels, with other pieces located in the Plantin-Moretus Museum in Antwerp. Her artistic works have been featured in exhibitions such as "Fatal flowers/Poetics of love" at the Verhaeren Museum and at the Musée des Beaux-Arts of Tournai.
