      Early Life, Family and Training

Michael Baxte was born on January 27, 1890, in the small town of Staroselje, located in Belarus within the Russian Empire. His family spoke Yiddish, the language of their home and community. The landscape of his childhood was shaped by the shifting demographics of the region, as the Chabad movement of Hasidic Jews, which had once been a central force in Staroselje, had largely departed by the time his family was preparing for a new life.

The decision to leave their homeland was likely prompted by the death of Michael Baxte’s father. His older brothers had already made the move to the United States, arriving in New York between 1903 and 1905. In 1907, Michael Baxte immigrated to the United States alongside his mother, Rebecca. Their early years in America involved a period of transition, including a time spent living in New Orleans around 1910, where the family may have spent time on a Louisiana plantation.

While he is remembered for his visual art, Michael Baxte’s early training was rooted in music. Around 1912, he returned to Europe to dedicate himself to the study of the violin. This period of musical immersion helped shape the disciplined, expressive nature that would later define his multifaceted career as a musician and a painter.

Life and Career in New York

After a period of living in New Orleans with his mother and brother, Michael Baxte settled into the bustling life of New York City. By 1920, he was living in Manhattan alongside the Algerian-born artist Violette Mège. Their shared life in the city was marked by a deep connection to both music and art. While he was a painter, he was equally an accomplished violinist, composer, and teacher. His musical compositions reached far beyond the city limits, with performances held as far away as the Tokyo Imperial Theater.

His presence in the city was felt within the community as much as it was in the arts. In 1922, the American Jewish Yearbook recognized him as a prominent member of the American Jewish community. As a teacher, he held a specific philosophy regarding the development of his students. He believed that art should be a personal experience and that a teacher's true purpose was to awaken an individual's unique personality through the patient application of science, rather than forcing a student to imitate a mentor.

      Artistic Achievements and Recognition

Michael Baxte lived a life where music and color were deeply intertwined. While many remember him for his skill as a violinist, his visual art earned its own significant place in the mid-century art scene. His approach to painting aligned with the School of Paris, a movement that influenced his perspective and technique. This connection to a broader international style helped define his presence in the American art world during a period of great transition.

His talent was recognized on a national stage quite early in his career. In 1928, he was named the winner of the Dudensing National Competition for American Painters, a distinction that marked him as a significant figure among his peers. This success was followed by an even more unique honor when his work was selected for the painting event at the 1936 Summer Olympics. To see a painter's work included in such a global competition speaks to the breadth of his reach and the respect his vision commanded.

His creative output was not limited to the canvas. As a composer and teacher, he believed that art should be a deeply personal experience, encouraging his students to find their own unique light rather than simply imitating a mentor. This philosophy of individual expression was as much a part of his legacy as the paintings themselves. Whether through the strings of a violin or the application of paint, Baxte sought to awaken a sense of personality in everything he created.
