The early years in Madrid and Rome
Born in Fuente de Cantos, Nicolás Megía began his training within the walls of the Escuela Especial de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado in Madrid. Between 1866 and 1870, he sat before the easels of Domingo Valdivieso and Federico de Madrazo, learning the foundations of the Academic style. A grant from the Diputación Provincial de Badajoz later pulled him away from Spain. He spent several years in Rome, from 1872 to 1878, where the light of Italy and the influence of the Macchiaioli group left their mark on his approach.
His path then led to Paris. In the studios of Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier, he refined a way of seeing that favored detail and historical accuracy. By 1880, his work was being moved through Europe and North America by a German firm, reaching collectors far beyond his Spanish roots. He presented his piece Laboremus at the Paris Salon during a time when many around him were turning toward Impressionism, yet he remained rooted in his historical and realistic focus.
A life of teaching and tradition
Upon returning to Madrid, Megía took on roles that placed him at the center of the local art community. He held the chair of painting at the Escuela Superior de Artes e Industrias and led the Sociedad de Aquarellistas as its president. His hands were busy with more than just his own canvases; he also served as a tutor to the sisters of King Alfonso XII. His work often focused on costumbrista themes, capturing scenes of everyday life and historical moments through both oil and watercolor.
His recognition in Spain was marked by specific honors, such as winning second prize in 1890 for a painting depicting a scene from the defense of Zaragoza. While his name faded from common conversation after his death in Madrid in 1917, his presence remained in the institutions he helped lead. His paintings, like Joven junto a la fuente, continue to exist as records of a specific era of Spanish academic painting.
