      A Life Rooted in Provence

René Seyssaud was born in Marseille on 16 June 1867. Though his early years were shaped by the urban atmosphere of his birthplace, his heart belonged to the landscapes of his ancestors. After the death of his father, a lawyer named Siffrein Seyssaud, the young boy moved to Avignon to live with his grandparents. It was here that his path in art began to take shape under the guidance of Pierre Grivolas at the École des beaux-arts d'Avignon.

His connection to the land was deeply personal. In 1899, he married Louise Philibert, a union that allowed him to settle in Villes-sur-Auzon. This region, with its rugged beauty and seasonal rhythms, became his primary subject. Later, due to the challenges of tuberculosis, he moved to Saint-Chamas in 1904 to be closer to the sea. He lived much of his life near the Étang de Berre, finding solace in the light and air of the coast.

The Language of Color and Earth

Seyssaud developed a way of seeing that moved away from simple depictions of local customs. Instead, he focused on the physical presence of the land itself. He was known for a powerful temperament in his work, using a bold palette of bright colors that helped position him as a precursor to Fauvism. His brushwork captured the strength of the seasons and the heavy reality of rural life.

His subjects were often found in the fields or quiet corners of Provence:

      • Still lifes featuring fruits like figs and quinces.
      • Landscapes of Mont Ventoux and the gorges of the Nesque.
      • Scenes of peasant life, including laborers working the soil.
      • Views of the Étang de Berre and the olive groves of his home.

He worked with various media, including oil on canvas, tempera on panel, and charcoal on paper. Whether painting a heavy summer harvest or a quiet night effect, he sought to show how man and nature are bound together through work and the earth.

      Recognition and Legacy

Seyssaud’s presence in the Parisian art scene was marked by several important exhibitions. He first showed at the Salon des Indépendants in 1892 and later participated in the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. His work reached notable galleries, including those of Le Barc de Beutville and Bernheim-Jeune. These appearances helped bring his specific vision of the South to a wider audience.

By the end of his life, his contributions to French art were formally acknowledged. In 1946, he was named an Officer of the Legion of Honour. He received the Grand Prix d'Honneur des Provinces Francaises at the Menton Biennale in 1952, the same year he passed away in Saint-Chamas. Today, his paintings reside in important collections such as the Musée d'Orsay and the Hermitage Museum, keeping the light of Provence alive.
