Early Life, Family and Training
Born in Vienna on 6 September 1850, Andreas Groll entered a world where the visual image was being captured in new and striking ways. He was the son of Andreas Groll, a photographer who had been active in the city until 1872. This familial connection to the lens and the study of light likely shaped the environment in which the young painter grew. Growing up in the heart of Austria, Groll was destined to follow a path of formal artistic discipline.
His formal education led him to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, a place where his talent was nurtured by some of the most significant figures of the era. He studied under the guidance of several masters, including Eduard Peithner von Lichtenfels, Anselm Feuerbach, August Eisenmenger, and Christian Griepenkerl. These teachers provided him with a rigorous foundation in the classical traditions of drawing and composition. Through this training, Groll developed the technical precision that would later define his work as both a painter and a drawing teacher.
Travels and Professional Career
After completing his formal studies, Groll sought the light and ancient forms of the south. Between 1876 and 1878, he undertook an extensive study trip to Italy, a period that would deeply inform his understanding of form and shadow. He spent much of his time wandering through Rome and Venice, absorbing the atmosphere of these great cities. This time abroad allowed him to move beyond the classroom and engage directly with the classical traditions that had shaped the history of painting.
His reputation as a skilled hand eventually led him back to the academic circles of Vienna. In 1887, he took up a position as a professor at the School of Applied Arts of the Austrian Museum of Art and Industry. It was here that he found his true calling as a pedagogue. He focused his instruction on life drawing, guiding students through the complexities of the human figure. He was regarded as an outstanding teacher, possessing a rare ability to communicate the nuances of anatomy and movement to those under his care.
Key Works and Artistic Output
Groll’s brush captured the quietude of human presence and the weight of religious devotion. In his 1891 painting, Maler, im Atelier, he turned his gaze toward the very essence of the creative life, depicting the artist within his workspace. This interest in the studio environment was further explored in another version from that same year, Maler, im Atelier, mit seinem Sohn (?), which offers a glimpse into the domestic and professional spheres of the painter's world.
His talent extended into the realm of sacred imagery and character studies. He applied his skill to religious themes, such as his 1894 work, Kath. Illustratie 1894 Flight into Egypt. Beyond these formal compositions, he sought to capture specific personalities and moments of stillness. He produced In stiller Betrachtung, a work that suggests a contemplative mood, and he also rendered The Actor Ludwig Gabillon about 1895, bringing a sense of theatrical life to the canvas.

Later Years and Death
The final years of Andreas Groll were spent within the familiar surroundings of Vienna, where he had established his reputation as a dedicated educator. His presence in the city remained a constant until his health began to fail. He eventually sought refuge in a Viennese sanatorium, a place where he would spend his final days away from the bustling studios and classrooms of his professional life.
The end came for him on 23 December 1907. He was 57 years old when he passed away in that sanatorium. His departure left a void in the artistic circles of the city he had called home since his birth. The solemnity of his passing was marked by a religious blessing on 25 December, held within the parish church to Maria Treu.
Following the rites of his faith, he was laid to rest in the Vienna Central Cemetery. He was buried there, returning to the earth of the city that had witnessed his growth from a student of the Academy to a respected professor. His life, marked by a devotion to the art of drawing and the instruction of others, reached its quiet conclusion in the heart of Austria.
