The Life and Art of Bernard Gärtner
Born in Trier, Germany, Bernard Gärtner was a painter who specialized in landscapes, portraits, and still lifes. His formal artistic training began at the Kunstgewerbeschule Trier, followed by studies at the Académie royale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. After settling in Düsseldorf, he became a member of the Künstlerverein Malkasten. His travels were extensive, including stays in Berlin and Munich, a journey through Italy, and time spent in Upper Bavaria and Switzerland. Notably, he spent the winter of 1927/1928 in Egypt.
Gärtner's work is characterized by a richness of color. His painting style was influenced by Paul Cézanne and other Impressionists. Following his service as a soldier in the First World War, where he sustained a permanent injury, he exhibited regularly in Berlin, the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, and various West German museums.
