Early Life, Family and Training
Born Karl August Büchel on 4 April 1872 in Mainz, Prussia, German Empire, the man who would become known as Charles Buchel spent his earliest years in a different land before moving to England as a child. This transition from the German Empire to the United Kingdom marked the beginning of a life deeply rooted in British artistic circles. He sought formal instruction to hone his craft, eventually studying art at the Royal Academy Schools, where he developed the technical foundation that would define his professional career.
In 1897, his personal life took a significant turn when he married Janet Edward Buyers in Marylebone. The couple built a family together, welcoming three sons into their home. William Brian was born in 1900, followed by Charles Anthony in 1903, and Philip Stuart in 1906. The family life of Charles Buchel was shaped by these milestones as he established himself within the creative landscape of London.
Patrons, Workshop and Commissions
In 1898, Buchel’s professional life took a significant turn when he was hired by the actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree. This partnership proved to be a long-lasting one, lasting sixteen years. During this time, Buchel became a fixture in the theatrical world, moving between the studio and the stage. He spent much of his energy capturing the likenesses of Tree in several portraits, documenting the man who had become his primary patron.
His work extended far beyond the canvas of formal portraiture. Buchel was deeply involved in the visual identity of the theatre, designing the programs that audiences held in their hands and the advertising posters that lined the streets. He also contributed many illustrations to the various theatre magazines that were popular during his era. This variety of work meant his hand was visible in many different corners of the London stage, from the grander portraits to the smaller, printed ephemera used to promote a performance.
Notable Portraits and Subjects
Buchel found his place within the lively circles of the theatre, becoming a familiar face to the leading actors of his day. He was often found in the company of stage stars, capturing the likenesses of those who commanded the London spotlight. His brush met the faces of Lily Langtry, Henry Irving, and George Alexander, men and women who defined the theatrical landscape of the era. Through these portraits, he documented the people who lived their lives under the bright lights of the stage.
His interest in his subjects extended beyond the footlights and into the private lives of notable figures. In 1918, he painted Radclyffe Hall, a work that remains a significant part of his legacy. His ability to translate the presence of a person onto canvas allowed him to move between the grand gestures of the theatre and more intimate, quiet studies. Whether working in oil or chalk, he focused on the individuals who shaped the cultural life of his time.
