      The River and the Studio

Portsmouth, Ohio, sits on the banks of a mercurial river, a place where the 1913 floods left deep impressions on a young boy. Clarence Holbrook Carter watches the water, developing an early eye for the way light hits a surface. By thirteen, he is sketching cartoons; by nineteen, he arrives in Cleveland. The transition is sharp. The quiet of the river town meets the grit of the Cleveland School of Art. He works in the tearoom of the Cleveland Museum of Art to fund his studies, painting copies of old masters like Ludovico Cardi while waiting for shifts to end.

A moment of chance alters everything. William Milliken, the director of the museum, walks through a studio and stops before a massive reproduction of a Pieta. The scale is an error, an innocent mistake of a student, but the skill is undeniable. This encounter launches a trajectory that leads far beyond Ohio. In 1927, Carter travels to Capri to study under Hans Hofmann. The Mediterranean sun and the compressed architecture of the Italian coast introduce him to modernist principles. He returns to the United States not just as a student, but as an artist with a global perspective.

The American Scene and the Great Depression

The 1930s demand a different kind of vision. The landscape of America is heavy with the weight of the Great Depression. Carter turns his attention to the rural reality of his home region. He paints farmers, fruit stands, and the industrial decay of railway scenes. His work captures the hardship of the era through a lens of textured realism. In 1935, he receives commissions for murals in Ravenna, Ohio, as part of the Public Works of Art Project. These large-scale works reflect the struggles of ordinary people with a quiet, heavy dignity.

His reputation grows through competition and public recognition. He wins numerous prizes at the Cleveland Museum of Art’s annual exhibitions, including thirteen first prizes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art acquires his work, specifically the piece The Creepers, marking him as a significant figure in American painting. During this period, he also serves as a regional superintendent for the WPA, overseeing artistic endeavors across Northeast Ohio. His brush captures both the beauty of the landscape and the burden of the era.

      From Advertising to Abstraction

Post-war life brings a shift in medium and message. The precision required for commercial design finds a home in Carter’s hands. Between 1944 and 1959, he works as an advertising designer for major corporations like Alcoa and Citibank. His imagery appears on the covers of Fortune, Time, and Newsweek. This period of intense graphic experimentation strips away the need for literal representation. He begins to embrace bold patterns and hard-edged design.

The transition into surrealism and abstraction is complete by the 1960s. The recognizable landscapes of his youth give way to mystical, structural forms. He adopts the ovoid or egg shape as a central motif, treating it with varying degrees of transparency. In series such as Over and Above, oversized animals peer over walls at the viewer. Later, in works like Transections and Eschatos, he uses geometric themes to explore the transition between life and death. The artist moves from the earth to the spirit, using pure shape and color to communicate universal truths.
