The Life and Career of Edwin Scharff
Edwin Scharff was a German sculptor born in Neu-Ulm. His formal artistic training began at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich between 1902 and 1903, followed by studies in painting at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste from 1904 to 1907. During the period of 1912 to 1913, he lived in Paris. After serving in the German army during World War One, where he sustained injuries, Scharff held a professorship of sculpture at the Vereinigte Staatsschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst in Berlin starting in 1923.
In 1928, Scharff won a bronze medal in the art competitions of the Olympic Games for his work titled "Médaille pour les Jeux Olympiques". Following his removal from his position in 1933, he worked at the Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf from 1934 to 1937. During this time, he produced two large equestrian statues for the portals of the Reich's Exhibition of 1937 in Düsseldorf, an event that led to him being classified as a degenerate artist. He continued his work in secret during World War Two and later became a professor at the Landeskunstschule in Hamburg.
