      The Making of a Maker

Growing up in Michigan, Fred Mead lived in a house where nothing was ever truly discarded. His father worked as an industrial designer for General Motors, and his mother worked in the blueprint department. This environment meant that furniture, clothing, and household goods were constantly being repaired or reimagined. He spent his childhood watching his father use sharp pencils and rulers at a drawing table, and he learned to build model airplanes at the age of twelve. These early years were spent exploring the woods, hunting for rocks, and investigating frozen creeks, all while absorbing a practical approach to creation.

Life did not always follow a straight path for Mead. After working in commercial art, he faced a period of significant personal loss and transition. He spent time working in a halfway house and navigating various jobs while searching for a sense of purpose. During this time, he turned to meditation to manage anxiety and find a sense of calm. He found that this practice allowed his mind to relax and provided a space where he could begin to plan the complex glass sculptures that would eventually define his career.

      Technique and Material

Mead’s work is rooted in the physical properties of glass and the precision of industrial design. He studied at the Penland School of Craft and the Corning Museum of Glass, refining a method of working with the material that involves both heat and structure. His process often involves hot fused glass, which is then ground and constructed using colored adhesives. He is known for a specific approach to stacked-glass sculptures, a technique he modified from the methods of Sidney Hutter.

His studio, Meadart, produces a variety of works that range from large-scale installations to functional objects. His output includes:

      • Stacked-glass sculptures
      • Cake plates
      • Candelabras
      • Coasters
      • Glass tables

      Presence and Scale

The scale of Mead's work can shift dramatically from small, handheld items to massive public installations. One notable collaboration with Zack Smith Johnson resulted in a piece titled Home, a structure made of glass and steel that stands 26’ tall. This work is located at the WNC Sculpture Center in Lenoir. His sculptures are often characterized by how they interact with light and their physical weight, moving between the delicate nature of glass and the strength of steel.

His pieces are held in several galleries, including the Lucy Clark Gallery in Brevard, Seven Sisters Craft Gallery in Black Mountain, Carlton Gallery in Banner Elk, and Banfield Gallery in Forest City. He produces approximately ten sculptures each year, maintaining a practice that balances the precision of his father's design background with the fluid, meditative qualities he discovered later in life.
