Born in Brooklyn in 1942, Gary Stephan is an American abstract painter who has exhibited his work throughout the United States and Europe. His academic foundation began with studies in industrial design at the Parsons School of Design and the Pratt Institute, followed by a Master of Fine Arts degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1967. After returning to New York, he served as a studio assistant to Jasper Johns before beginning to show his work with the David Whitney Gallery in 1970. His presence in the art world was noted by the New York Times, which referred to his work as being among the most closely watched developments of the early 1970s.
