Gavriil Yakovlev lived a life shaped by the formal traditions of the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he studied until 1839. Born in the Kostroma Governorate in 1819, he moved through the artistic circles of his time, eventually settling in Saint Petersburg. His work focused heavily on the people of his era, capturing the likenesses of individuals with a quiet, steady hand. He passed away in Saint Petersburg in 1862.
His brush was often turned toward the faces of the social elite and the private citizens of Russia. He had a way of documenting the presence of his subjects, whether they were women in fine attire or men of standing. His ability to render the specific details of a person's character allowed his portraits to remain as tangible records of the mid-19th century.

He painted many women, such as Elizabeth Orbeliani and Vera Bezobrazova, capturing the textures of their clothing and the stillness of their expressions. Some of his works, like his 1848 portrait of Arkadiy Zakhar Telyakovskiy, found their way into significant collections, including the Hermitage. These works show a man deeply engaged with the art of the likeness.
