The Life and Artistic Evolution of Giuseppe Raggio
Born in Chiavari, Italy, Giuseppe Raggio initially faced a different path as his father intended for him to join the merchant marine. However, by 1845, he chose to pursue painting, participating in his first exhibition in Genoa. He later enrolled in the Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence, studying under the neoclassical painter Giuseppe Bezzuoli. By 1848, Raggio moved to Rome, where he met the painter Nino Costa. While his early career included religious subjects such as a Holy Family (1854, Genoa) and a Samaritan (1862), his focus shifted by 1860 toward scenes of cattle farming in the Lazio countryside, as seen in his work Bufali (1860) at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.

In 1915, he was knighted in the Order of the Crown of Italy. Following a period of poverty, he was supported by a commission from the Società Economica di Chiavari, which purchased several of his works.
