The Life of Jean-Michel Grobon
Jean-Michel Grobon was a French painter and engraver from Lyon, primarily known for his landscapes and genre scenes. Born in Lyon, he spent much of his early life in the region, including time in Crémieu where he studied drawing under Alexis Grognard. During the French Revolution, he moved to Paris to register at the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, though the era's events prevented a planned study trip to Rome. To support himself during this period, he painted still-lifes and scenes with animals before transitioning to painting landscapes en plein air.
Grobon was a significant representative of the Lyon School and held several academic positions. He became a member of the Academy of Lyon and served as a Professor of Drawing in 1801, later accepting an appointment at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Lyon. His work was exhibited at the Salon, including in 1796 and 1800, where his contributions were praised by Jacques-Louis David. In 1813, he became one of the first local artists to be displayed at the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon.
