A Life Rooted in Art
John Hollins entered the world in Birmingham on 1 June 1798, born into a family where the brush and chisel were common tools of the trade. His father, Thomas, worked as a glass painter, and this early exposure to craftsmanship likely shaped his own path. He grew up surrounded by the creative energy of relatives, including his cousin Peter, a sculptor, and his uncle William, who practiced both architecture and sculpture.
In 1822, Hollins moved to London, seeking to establish himself in the heart of the British art scene. His early years in the city were spent developing his skills as a portraitist. Between 1825 and 1827, he traveled to Italy to further his studies, an experience that brought him into contact with the works of great masters and established a lasting connection with the artist David Wilkie.
The Art of the Portrait
Upon returning to London in 1827, Hollins resumed his practice with a focus on oil paintings and miniatures. He became a regular presence at major exhibitions, including the British Institution and the Royal Academy of Art. His ability to capture likenesses earned him recognition, leading to his election as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1842.
While he was primarily known for his portraits, Hollins also applied his talent to landscapes, costume figures, and scenes inspired by literature. He found inspiration in the works of Shakespeare, Goethe, and Boccaccio. One of his most notable paintings, A Consultation prior to the Aerial Voyage to Weilburg, captures a specific moment in history: the planning of a record-breaking balloon trip in 1836. In this work, he included portraits of the balloonists Robert Hollond, Thomas Monck Mason, and Charles Green, as well as a self-portrait of himself.
Final Years in London
Hollins lived much of his adult life in London, working at 47 Berners Street. His career was marked by steady professional respect, and he was able to command good prices for his work during his time as an Associate. He never married, and his later years were spent continuing his various artistic pursuits until his death on 7 March 1855.
He was laid to rest at Kensal Green Cemetery, where a monument created by his cousin Peter marks his final resting place. His legacy remains visible in collections such as the National Portrait Gallery, which holds works that document the faces and events of his era.
