      The Hand Behind the Image

In the quiet corners of Silesia, the work of Karol Zipser remains tied to a specific moment of devotion and artistic necessity. For a long time, history viewed him merely as a restorer, a man tasked with tending to an existing relic. The assumption was that in 1795, he had simply attempted to mend a copy of a much older image. However, closer inspection of the layers of paint tells a different story. He did not just fix what was there; he created something new when the old ways failed.

The history of the Piekary Basilica is one of movement and loss. An original image, likely from the 15th or 16th century, was moved to Opole in 1702 during the Swedish Deluge. This left a void in the local chapel, filled only by a copy that looked nothing like the original. Zipser was brought in to work on this copy, but the attempt to restore the old surface did not go as planned. The result was a canvas that sat in a side chapel, a quiet reminder of a failed technical endeavor.

      The Creation of 1795

When the restoration of the existing copy failed to satisfy the needs of the faithful, Zipser turned to a fresh canvas. He painted a new version of Our Lady of Piekary, drawing inspiration from the memory of the original that had been lost to Opole. This was not a mere imitation but a reconstruction of a feeling. This 1795 work eventually found its place in the main altar, becoming the center of a local devotion that grew steadily over the decades. It was a response to a specific need, born from the dissatisfaction of a community and the practical reality of a ruined painting.

His process involved several distinct layers of history:

      • The original, lost image from the 15th or 16th century, now located in Opole.
      • The unsuccessful restoration attempt, a canvas currently kept in the chapel near the sacristy of the Piekary Basilica.
      • The 1795 painting, the work that became the focal point of the basilica.

      A Legacy in Paint

The significance of Zipser’s work lies in its survival and its transformation. What began as a failed attempt to preserve the past ended in the creation of a new object of veneration. In 1925, the image he painted was adorned with papal crowns, marking its transition from a local replacement to a recognized sacred object. He remains a figure defined by this shift—from a man trying to fix an old thing to the artist who provided the image that people actually recognized and loved.
