The Belgian Brush
Belgium, 1835. A life begins that will eventually find its way into the quiet corners of auction houses from Antwerp to New York. Louis Derickx, sometimes recorded as Lodewijk, operates within the landscape of the nineteenth century. His hands move across canvas, panel, and board, capturing the heavy atmosphere of the natural world.
The work exists in fragments of light and shadow. In one scene, Deux femmes dans une CLairère, two figures occupy a clearing, the oil on canvas holding the stillness of the woods. Another moment captures the tension of the elements in Right before the storm, where the weight of an approaching tempest is felt through the medium of oil on board. There is no grand movement defined here, only the steady application of paint to record the earth and its inhabitants.
Labor and Light
The subjects are often grounded in the reality of the land. In Farmers at work on the field, the scale is intimate, an oil on panel that brings the viewer close to the rhythmic toil of agricultural life. The brushwork follows the necessity of the subject, whether documenting the movement of workers or the shifting light through trees.
The artist leaves his mark in specific, localized ways:
- A signature and date, Louis. Dericks 64, appearing on the lower left of a canvas.
- The simple identification of Louis Derickx on works of panel and board.
- A focus on the textures of the Belgian landscape and its people.
The Final Record
By 1895, the activity of this painter ceases. The records that remain are found in the ledgers of auctioneers. Pieces move through Christie's New York and Sotheby's, surfacing decades after his death to find new collectors. A single work reached a price of 25,200 USD in 2024, a high point in the recorded turnover for his output.
His legacy is not found in written manifestos but in the physical survival of these oils. The paintings endure as objects of historical record, carrying the specific light of a nineteenth-century Belgian perspective into the modern era.
