The Quiet Presence of Maire Koll
Born in 1956, Maire Koll has left a mark on the Estonian art scene through works that reside in the country's most significant public collections. Her practice is rooted in the tactile nature of oil on canvas, a medium that allows for a slow, deliberate application of color and form. There is a certain stillness in her approach, a way of capturing subjects that feels observed rather than staged.
Her work is held by institutions that preserve the visual history of Estonia, including the Art Museum of Estonia and the Tartu Art Museum. These collections house pieces that reflect her specific way of seeing, focusing on the weight and presence of the subject within the frame.
Works and Collections
The physical presence of her paintings can be felt in the way they occupy space. Her compositions often deal with the human form or abstract structures, rendered with a focus on the material reality of the paint itself.
- Madonna: An oil painting held by the Eesti Kunstimuuseum.
- Keerukuju: An oil painting held by the Tartu Kunstimuuseum.
- Untitled: A work from 1988.
A Record of Form
In the late 1980s, Koll's work was part of the evolving visual language of her time. The paintings from this period, such as those from 1989, show a commitment to the medium of oil, using its density to build up the surfaces of her subjects. Whether working on a large scale or a smaller one, the focus remains on the relationship between the shape and the space it inhabits.
