A Life of Accumulation and Artistry

Moscow, 1839. A child is born into a merchant family built on the tea trade. The early years are marked by sudden loss; his mother passes when he is only two, and his father follows when he reaches fourteen. His older brother, Vasily, steps in to complete his upbringing. By 1856, the boy enters the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, seeking a path beyond commerce.

The halls of the Academy provide rigorous training under professors Fyodor Zavyalov and Fyodor Bruni. He does not remain confined to Russian classrooms. He travels. Germany, France, and Italy become his true instructors. These years abroad shape a man who is simultaneously a painter, an engraver, and an archaeologist. In 1863, he returns to the Academy, presenting two paintings on Classical subjects and receiving the title of Academician.

His hands are busy with more than just brushes. He works with engraving and the sharp precision of eau-forte. His life expands into the administrative and the scholarly. He becomes a member of the Imperial Archaeological Commission and a consultant for the Department of Medieval and Renaissance Art at the Hermitage. He is a man of many titles: philanthropist, author, and advisor to museums.

      The Weight of the Collection

A mansion on Vasilievsky Island becomes the center of his universe. In 1882, he begins housing a growing hoard of treasures in five small rooms within an attic. On Sundays, the doors open. The public enters for free. The collection is a dense gathering of centuries and geographies: majolica, bronze, carved wood from the Italian Renaissance, glass, ivories, and ceramics.

The most discussed elements are his 162 enamels. He acquires them with unbridled enthusiasm between 1892 and 1911. Some pieces, like those depicting St. John Chrysostom, spark intense debate. Later scientific analysis reveals a shadow over this collection: approximately 150 of these enamels were actually the work of Petr Nikolayevich Popov, a craftsman for Faberge who collaborated with a dealer to defraud Botkin.

The collection is not static. It moves through history and hands. In 1911, he publishes a catalog of his finds. Later, pieces from his holdings find their way into the hands of J. P. Morgan or are distributed among museums in the United States and Russia, including Dumbarton Oaks and the Hermitage.

      The Painted Record

His canvases focus on the heavy themes of history and the quietude of genre scenes. He seeks out expressive figures and compositions that command attention. His historical works carry a specific weight:

      • Wives, be looking at Calvary
      • Our Lady of Sorrow (Mater Dolorosa)
      • Evening in the monastery of St. Francis of Assyria
      • The Return from Calvary
      • Talk of Christ on the Mount of Olives
      • The Burial of the martyr

In his genre paintings, he captures moments of daily life and religious devotion. He explores the lives of the Old Believers and the atmosphere of Italian landscapes. Notable works include:

      • Pepina
      • Father Aliberti
      • Noviziata (entered the monastery)
      • The funeral of the first Christians in Rome
      • Vespers at Assisi
      • Old Believer
      • Nuns

His legacy remains tied to this duality: the creator of images and the curator of objects. He leaves behind a record of Russian art history, including his 1880 publication on the life and correspondence of Alexander Ivanov.
