The Early Life and Training of Yuri Suzuki

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1980, Yuri Suzuki spent his formative years amidst the bustling energy of the Shibuya ward. His early curiosity was not directed toward the traditional, but rather toward the peculiar and the playful. While attending Wako Gakuen High School, he found himself drawn to the work of Maywa Denki, a product design artist collective known for their idiosyncratic musical instruments. This fascination was not merely passive; Suzuki began crafting his own replicas of their unique creations, attempting to grasp the mechanics of their sound and form. His dedication did not go unnoticed by the group, and by 1999, he was brought into their circle to serve as an assistant.

This hands-on apprenticeship provided a foundation for his formal studies in design. Suzuki pursued a BA in Product Design at Nihon University, where he began to refine the technical skills necessary to bridge the gap between physical objects and auditory experiences. His education was a period of steady development, moving from the imitation of existing musical tools to the conceptualization of his own. Seeking to expand his perspective beyond the borders of Japan, he moved to London in 2005. There, he entered the Royal College of Art to undertake an MA in Design Products, a move that would eventually place him at the center of a global dialogue between sound and visual form.

A Career in Sound Design and Design

After completing his studies, Suzuki moved through various creative environments that shaped his understanding of how sound interacts with the physical world. He spent time in Stockholm working for Teenage Engineering and later moved to California to contribute to the Research Department of Disney. These experiences allowed him to refine a practice that sits between the precision of product design and the spontaneity of music. In 2013, he launched Ototo, a circuit board designed to transform any conductive material into a musical instrument, a project that invited people to find music in the objects surrounding them.

His professional path eventually led him to the London office of Pentagram, where he served as a partner from November 2018 until May 2024. During this period, his work expanded into the realm of sonic branding and complex installations. He also sought to explore more experimental territories through music, launching the experimental label MSG in September 2020. This venture allowed him to push the boundaries of sound away from traditional commercial constraints. His influence eventually returned to his roots in academia, as he was appointed a Visiting Professor at Nihon University in April 2025.

      Technique and Style

Suzuki approached his craft with a curious spirit, often mixing computer programming with a sense of grade-school charm. His whimsical installations invited people to interact with sound in ways that felt both playful and profound. He used sound as a medium to shape physical spaces, turning quiet environments into sites of dynamic social discourse. By doing so, he sought to examine the delicate relationship between people and the noises they make, questioning how both music and sound affect the human mind.

His method relied heavily on the intersection of different cultures and genres. He built works that functioned as explorations of human interrelationships, often using autonomous generative tools like artificial intelligence and machine learning. These technologies allowed his soundscapes to remain ever-evolving, ensuring that no two listeners experienced the exact same moment. Rather than creating static objects, he crafted experiences that changed as they were being heard.

      Notable Works and Collaborations

Suzuki’s creative impulses often found expression through playful, mechanical life. For the project Looks Like Music, he designed a suite of music-playing robots, including the "basscar," "glitchcar," "melodycar," "arpeggiocar," and "drumcar." These small machines ran along a winding path, emitting sounds that corresponded to the colors they encountered on the floor. By mixing these colors, participants could influence the notes produced by the machines. This spirit of collaboration extended to his work with musicians, where he designed and produced musical instruments for will.i.am and Jeff Mills. He also organized a workshop-based music video brief alongside Damian Kulash from OK Go, bridging the gap between technical design and musical performance.

His fascination with the history of electronic sound led him to a significant reimagining of Raymond Scott’s Electronium. Suzuki sought to recreate this vintage machine as software, using modern AI and algorithms to bring its counterpoint functions to life. The resulting Digital Electronium transformed the concept into a dynamic, ever-evolving soundscape. Through this installation, visitors were invited to input their own sounds, allowing them to actively shape and contribute to the changing sonic environment. This work allowed the technology to move beyond its original physical form, turning a piece of musical history into an interactive, generative experience for the public.
