Marriage & Family Life: In 1912 Permeke married Maria Delaere and settled in Ostend—a haven for artistic inspiration. The arrival of his son John in 1916 brought joy but also disruption, forcing him to relocate to Devonshire.
His involvement with George Minne fostered a connection that would continue throughout their lives.
Post-War Landscape & Sculpture: Following World War I, Permeke returned to Ostend and focused on depicting the realities of working-class life—a stark contrast to the idyllic Devonshire years.
Between 1922 and 1924 he collaborated closely with Van den Berghe, exploring new artistic avenues. His expeditions to Vevey in Switzerland yielded stunning mountain landscapes.
