The Soul of the Moor: The Life and Art of John McCombs

Born in Manchester in 1943, John McCombs emerged as a profound chronicler of the British landscape, specifically the rugged and atmospheric terrain of Saddleworth. His artistic journey was not merely one of technical development but a deep-seated pilgrimage to the heart of the North West. After honing his craft at St. Martin's College of Art in London—studying under luminaries such as Frank Kossoff and Leon Kossoff—McCombs made the pivotal decision to return to his roots. This homecoming allowed him to merge the sophisticated, expressive techniques learned in the capital with an intimate, lifelong devotion to the moors, valleys, and villages of Greater Manchester. His work serves as a visual bridge between the grand traditions of British landscape painting and a deeply personal, regional identity.

The essence of McCombs’s oeuvre lies in his ability to capture the ephemeral qualities of light and weather that define the Saddleworth landscape. Whether rendering the misty grandeur of a winter snowscape or the vibrant, fleeting hues of spring wildflowers, his approach was rooted in meticulous observation. His technique, particularly in watercolor, involved the delicate layering of thin washes to achieve subtle tonal variations and a sense of luminous depth. While he is celebrated for his mastery of watercolor, his oil paintings possess an equally expressive quality, utilizing loose brushwork and a palette of muted greens, blues, and earthy browns to faithfully reproduce the subdued, often melancholic beauty of the moorland environment. Through his eyes, the familiar landscapes of Fletcher's Mill or Wade Lock Canal are transformed into poetic meditations on nature's permanence and change.

A Legacy of Excellence and Recognition

Throughout a prolific career, McCombs achieved significant distinction within the British art community, earning accolades that reflected both his technical skill and his leadership in the arts. His professional milestones are marked by prestigious memberships and honors that underscore his impact on the regional and national stages:

• Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (F.R.S.A.), a testament to his broad contribution to the artistic landscape.
• Member of the Royal Society of British Artists (R.B.A.) and the Royal Institute of Oil Painters (R.O.I.), demonstrating his versatility across mediums.
• President of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts (M.A.F.A.), a role in which he helped shape the cultural life of his home region.
• Recipient of numerous awards, including the David Murray Scholarship from the Royal Academy and the le Clerc Fowle Medal.

Beyond the gallery walls, McCombs’s influence extended to the very structure of the art world in Northern England. As a founder member of the New Manchester Group of Artists and a long-standing figure on various academy councils, he was instrumental in fostering local talent and maintaining the vitality of the Manchester art scene. His work, held in prestigious public collections such as the Manchester Art Gallery and cherished in private collections worldwide, ensures that his evocative depictions of Saddleworth remain a permanent part of the British visual heritage.
