The Artistic Evolution of Bruno Kurz

Born in Langenargen, Germany, Bruno Kurz is a painter and graphic artist whose work explores the interplay of color, material, and light. His practice often involves working on reflective surfaces such as metal, where he creates expansive color fields that offer vague allusions to flora and landscape. These works are characterized by a sense of luminosity and depth, often utilizing the square format as a signature feature. Through a process of overpainting and modifying textures, Kurz develops multiple layers of color that appear to suspend two-dimensionality, leading the viewer into infinite spaces.

His technical approach involves merging various substances, including synthetic resins, pigments, inks, watercolor, acrylic, and oil paints. By using materials like sheet metal and modifying their surfaces with sanders, he creates unique chromatic effects as the metal absorbs color differently. His work has evolved from meditative moods toward more expressive gestures, where the ephemeral and the transient are conveyed through the manifestation of elementary forces.

      Travel and Installation

Kurz's artistic journey has been shaped by extensive travels to Southern Europe, India, Mexico, Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Andalusia, Greece, and La Gomera. These experiences of nature and light have informed major work cycles, such as his Hebrides Cycle, which features horizontal layers of delicate color fields. His explorations have also extended to Northern Europe, including the Outer Hebrides, the Orkney Islands, the Scottish Highlands, and Bergen in Norway.

Beyond traditional painting, Kurz has created large-scale art installations. His work in the industrial buildings of the IWKA in Karlsruhe involved creating geometric sculptures of plastic sheeting that reflected sunlight. His installation aller Farben bloß was presented in the baroque halls of the Ettlinger Schloss, utilizing colored plastic film to create sequences of colored light. He currently lives and works in Karlsruhe and India.
