A Life in Art and Education

Friedrich Heubner was a German painter, draftsman, illustrator, and university teacher. Born in Dresden, Germany, he studied at the Dresden School of Applied Arts and later at the Munich School of Applied Arts. His artistic journey included a period in Paris and membership in the artist group Die Sechs. He was a frequent exhibitor with the Munich Secession and held various academic positions, serving as a professor for free graphics at the Munich School of Applied Arts, the Nuremberg State School for Applied Arts, and the Academy in Munich.

His diverse body of work spanned several disciplines. He was a graphic designer who received a prize for a poster design for the first exhibition of the German Werkbund. His career included creating caricatures for publications such as Jugend, Die Gartenlaube, and Simplicissimus, as well as designing advertising and political posters. In the 1920s, his focus shifted toward book illustration, etchings, and lithographs.

      Styles and Subject Matter

Heubner’s style evolved from Munich Jugendstil into a spirited drawing style. During the 1920s, his travels inspired expressive landscape paintings. Between 1938 and 1944, he exhibited various landscape depictions at the Great German Art Exhibitions in the Munich Haus der Deutschen Kunst. Following the destruction of his Munich studio in 1944, he lived in Chieming until 1951.

His later work included significant drawings of the destroyed city of Munich and its reconstruction, many of which are held in the Munich City Museum collection. In his post-retirement years, he returned to painting landscapes and still lifes. During the 1950s, he also designed stained glass windows for the Mayer'sche Hofkunstanstalt, often featuring fairy tale motifs.
