A Life of Medicine and Surrealism

Grace Pailthorpe was a British surrealist painter, surgeon, and psychology researcher. Born in St Leonards, United Kingdom, she was the only daughter among ten children. After studying at the Royal College of Music, she pursued medicine and qualified as a doctor at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle upon Tyne. During World War I, she served as a surgeon at military hospitals in London, Paris, and Liverpool, including work at the Hôpital Temporaire d'Arc-en-Barrois in France and the Scottish Women's Hospital in Salonika.

Her medical career included serving as a district medical officer in Youanmi, Western Australia, and researching criminal psychology at Birmingham Prison and Holloway Women's Prison. In 1931, she established the Association for the Scientific Treatment of Criminals. Later, she served as a Consultant Psychiatrist at the Portman Clinic and ran a School of Art Therapy.

      Artistic Exploration and Research

In 1935, Pailthorpe began researching the psychology of art alongside Reuben Mednikoff. Living in Port Isaac, Cornwall, the couple conducted experiments in psychoanalysis and created surrealist art. Pailthorpe contributed to the International Surrealist Exhibition in London in 1936 and various publications like the London Bulletin. Her work received praise from André Breton. In 1938, she published The Scientific Aspect of Surrealism, proposing that surrealism and psychoanalysis were tools for personal liberation and artistic creativity.

Pailthorpe and Mednikoff practiced an unorthodox method of analysis, swapping the roles of patient and analyst every fortnight. After being expelled from the British Surrealist group in 1940, they moved to New York City and California. In 1944, they held a joint exhibition at the Vancouver Art Gallery, which was influential to surrealist art in western Canada. She died in July 1971.
