Born in the former 2nd arrondissement of Paris, France, Gustave Bourgain was a French painter, engraver, and illustrator. He received his artistic training at the École des beaux-arts de Paris, where he was the student of Jean-Léon Gérôme and Édouard Detaille. His professional recognition grew through his participation in the Salon des artistes français, beginning in 1880, and his work was also sent to the Royal Academy in London. In 1887, he was appointed as the official painter of the Marine.

Bourgain’s career as an illustrator saw him traveling to Russia to cover the coronation of Tsar Alexander III in 1881, and to Egypt during the Anglo-Egyptian War of 1882. During the First World War, despite being too old for mobilization in 1914, he carried out missions for the Musée de l'Armée to sketch the daily life of soldiers during their periods of rest on the front. He died in the 10th arrondissement of Paris.
