**key patron:** adolph of burgundy, seigneur of waeken, under whose patronage de heere painted portraits of him, his wife, and their fool.
**notable work:** "the queen of sheba before solomon," now in the chapel of st. ivo in the cathedral at ghent, likely part of decorations for the chapter of the golden fleece in 1559.

de heere was a member of the chamber of rhetoric, "jesus with the balsam flower," and published a collection of poems in 1565. his school of painting in ghent promised to carry on the italianized traditions of frans floris. **key artistic movements:** - **flemish masters:** influenced by the works of bruegel, rogier van der weyden, robert campin, anthony van dyck, jacob jordaens, and peter paul rubens. - **italianized traditions:** adopting styles from frans floris and his pupils.

later life and legacy

after fleeing ghent due to religious wars in 1568, de heere worked in france and england, designing tapestries and painting for edward clinton, the 1st earl of lincoln. upon the pacification of ghent in 1576, he returned to ghent, where he passed away in 1584.
